iPhone Shows SOS Abroad: Causes and Fixes
You land at Heathrow, turn off airplane mode, and see "SOS" in the top corner of your screen. AT&T charges up to $15/day for international roaming outside a plan. GoMoWorld: €10.99 for 15 days, with 10GB of data tailored to your destination.
Why Your iPhone Shows SOS Abroad
"SOS" means your iPhone lost connection to your home network. You can only make emergency calls. The device detects a cellular tower, but your carrier refuses the connection.
Main causes:
- International roaming is turned off in your iOS settings.
- Your home carrier blocks international roaming on your specific plan.
- You hit a spending cap or have an unpaid bill.
- The local network has zero coverage in your current location.
When carriers block you, they push expensive daily passes. A two-week trip can easily add $200 to your monthly bill.
| Carrier | Roaming Plan | Estimated Price |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | International Day Pass | ~$15/day |
| T-Mobile | International plan | ~$15/day |
| Verizon | TravelPass | ~$15/day |
| GoMoWorld eSIM | 15 days, 10GB data | €10.99 |
Quick Fix: Solve It in 2 Minutes
Start with the basics. Do not panic.
- Toggle Airplane Mode: Swipe down from the top right of your screen. Tap the airplane icon. Wait exactly 30 seconds. Tap it again to reconnect.
- Check Cellular Settings: Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. Make sure "Data Roaming" is toggled on. If it is off, your phone blocks foreign networks by default.
- Restart Your iPhone: Hold the side button and the volume up button simultaneously. Slide to power off. Wait one full minute, then turn it back on. This forces the modem to ping local towers again.
If your phone says "No SIM" instead of SOS, read our guide on the no-SIM error or our full iPhone stuck on SOS guide.
Advanced Fixes if the Problem Persists
Still stuck on SOS? Force your iPhone to find a new network manually.
Manually Select a Network Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection. Turn off the "Automatic" toggle. A list of local carriers will appear after a few seconds. Tap one of the available networks. Wait for the signal bars to show up. If it fails, try the next carrier on the list.
Reset Network Settings This clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords and cellular configurations. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Your phone will reboot.
Check Your Physical SIM Card Physical SIM cards fail over time. Eject the SIM tray, wipe the gold contacts with a clean microfiber cloth, and reinsert it. If the chip is visibly scratched, check our guide on a damaged SIM card.
Update Carrier Settings Connect to hotel Wi-Fi. Go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available from your carrier, a prompt appears within 10 seconds. Tap "Update".

Differences by Model (iPhone and Earlier Versions)
Apple changed how network errors look in recent iOS updates.
If you use an iPhone 13 or newer with iOS 16 or iOS 17, the status bar shows "SOS" or "SOS only" in the top right corner. If you use an iPhone 12 or older, or run iOS 15 or earlier, the status bar shows "No Service" or "Searching...".
The problem is identical. The fixes above apply to both.
Note that iPhone 14 and newer models feature Emergency SOS via satellite. If you are entirely off the grid without Wi-Fi or cellular coverage, a satellite icon appears. This allows you to text emergency services, but it does not give you regular internet access.
How to Prevent This in the Future

Relying on your home carrier abroad guarantees stress. To prevent this problem for good, a GoMoWorld eSIM solves it upfront.
You keep your home number active for calls and texts. You use a dedicated GoMoWorld data plan for internet access. GoMoWorld is a data-only service. You install it entirely through the GoMoWorld app. No physical stores, no waiting in line.
Buy your plan before your trip. Plans never expire until you activate them. Buy now, activate later. When you land, open the app and tap "Start". No auto-activation. You control exactly when your data starts.
Because it is a prepay system, you face zero overage fees. When your data runs out, the connection stops. You simply buy another plan if you need more. Every plan includes mobile hotspot access, allowing you to share your connection with your laptop or travel partner.

FAQ
Why is my iPhone stuck on SOS mode?
Your iPhone is stuck on SOS mode because it cannot connect to your cellular network. This happens abroad if your carrier blocks international roaming or if data roaming is disabled in your settings.
Why does my phone say emergency calls only?
This message means your phone detects a cellular signal from a local tower, but your carrier does not authorize you to use it. You can dial 911 or 112, but you cannot browse the web or send standard texts.
How to block foreign calls on iPhone?
Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. Toggle it on. This sends numbers not in your contacts straight to voicemail, saving you from expensive international receiving fees.
Why is my phone on SOS?
Your phone is on SOS due to network outages, unpaid carrier bills, damaged SIM cards, or being outside your coverage area without a valid roaming plan. Sometimes, an outdated iOS version causes software bugs that block network access. Update your phone via Wi-Fi to rule this out.
